Django Unchained

I went and saw Quentin Tarantino's newest film last night and absolutely loved it.  I am not going to sit here and say a bunch of stuff about why it was so fantastic.  Vince over at Filmdrunk did a much better job than I ever could.

Instead I want to talk about something that I have not seen any other reviewers mention.  I thought Jamie Foxx was awesome as Django.  Everyone has been saying how great Leo, Waltz, and Jackson were (and I agree with all of them), but they keep saying that Foxx was decent.  He played it like a young Clint Eastwood.  He had that cool, silent, chewing on a cigar schtick down and it was great. 

The other thing I want to mention is the use of the "n-word."  I did not think it was used in an over-abundance.  I have heard that people feel that a white director cannot make a movie about slavery and use that word.  However, does anyone ever say the same thing about The Wire?  David Simon is white and his characters say it all the time.

I feel that in the context of the movie, if white characters from the South did not say it, the movie would have felt a bit disingenuous.  It is odd how a funny Tarantino film actually portrayed how horrible slavery was and how terrible Southern people could be at times. 

I suggest checking the movie out.  Unless you do not like Westerns or Tarantino films, then I would say skip it.
